Infrastructure Custodianship

Servers, domains, certificates, mail, backups and member records for organisations whose systems must outlive every volunteer board that governs them.

The problem this solves

A professional society elects new officers every year or two. A small institution’s technical knowledge lives in one volunteer’s head until that volunteer moves away. A foundation’s website was built by a vendor who no longer returns calls, on a platform nobody can log into, with a domain registered to a personal email address that has lapsed.

None of this is a technology problem. It is an institutional memory problem, and it is the single most common way organisations lose their digital presence.

What custodianship includes

  • Domain registration and DNS held in the organisation’s name, with renewal tracked so it cannot lapse
  • Hosting, TLS certificates, mail and mailing lists, monitored and kept current
  • Platform and security updates, with backups verified rather than merely scheduled
  • Routine content and structural changes throughout the year
  • An annual written report: what changed, what was spent, what is at risk, what should be decided this year
  • A documented runbook, so any competent engineer could take over without archaeology

What it deliberately excludes

We do not take hosting-only accounts where there is no engineering relationship, and we do not compete on price with commodity providers. If all you need is a server, a commodity host will serve you better and cheaper, and we will say so.

Your exit is part of the deal

Everything runs on standard components: standard SQL, standard files, standard DNS. On request, at any time and without penalty, we will produce a full export of your site, database and configuration, and assist in transferring the domains. A custodian who makes leaving difficult is not a custodian.
